Precious & Semi Precious Metals

Silver

Silver, like other precious metals, can be used as an investment. It has been used as a form of money and a store of value for over 4,000 years, but it lost its role as legal tender in developed countries when the silver standard was phased out in 1935. Unlike the dollar or other currencies, it has intrinsic value as a physical asset. Silver has a long history of holding its value and performs well when interest rates are low — and fixed-income investments aren't earning much. In these ways, silver is similar to gold as an investment, serving a similar "safe haven" function.
